We often hear that one of your biggest concerns is how to fund your study abroad experience. This is certainly a valid consideration, and we want you to know that there is money available!

University of Miami Scholarships

The Study Abroad office offers several scholarships. Please click on each scholarship title for the application and requirements.

The Study Abroad Stipend
Undergraduate students who participate in a University of Miami study abroad program may apply for a stipend to help defray costs associated with studying abroad.Studentsmustapply to their program of interest prior to initiating the Study Abroad Stipend application.

The Belton G. & Margaret T. Aldridge scholarship is intended for meritorious undergraduate students pursuing studies in tropical or subtropical biology who have demonstrated financial need. The Aldridge Scholarship can be used for students to participate in study abroad programs in the tropics run by the Department of Biology. The scholarship will be awarded based upon the Department of Biology review of competing applications.
Eligibility Requirements:
• Demonstrated financial need
• Biology major

Interested students should submit all scholarship requirements in one envelope to the Biology Department Office (215 Cox Science Bldg.) to the attention of Dr. Kathleen Sealey before November 1 of the semester they apply to their respective program.

Plus One Scholarship
The Plus One Scholarship is a program of educational enrichment that offers University of Miami undergraduates a tuition-free year or semester beyond the normal number of years required to complete an undergraduate degree. The program’s single purpose is to give you the opportunity to broaden and expand your learning and study subjects your degree requirements and other academic commitments may preclude.

Ashley Soulé Conroy Study Abroad Scholarship
Semester awards of $4,000 for U.S. citizens with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Baden-Wurttemberg Scholarship for Study at the University of Mannheim in Germany

Benjamin A. Gilman National Scholarship Program for Study Abroad
Semester and summer awards up to $5,000 to students who are US citizens and currently receive a Federal Pell Grant.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships to US undergraduate students to study for one semester or academic year in Japan. The Foundation aims to expand the opportunities for study abroad in Japan to help prepare America’s young people to assume future global leadership roles. Bridging Scholars are awarded scholarships of up to $5,000 for the academic year, which provide for travel and daily cost-of-living expenses.

BUTEX Scholarship
A scholarship valued at£500 awarded to a number of students who will be studying at a BUTEX Full Member institution. Students can find a list of BUTEX Full Member institutions here and learn how to apply here.

Columbus Guarini Scholarship for Italian-American Students

Students of Italian descent are eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to $5,000 to study abroad at John Cabot University for one or two semesters.

Flywire Charitable Foundation Academic Scholarships
Aiming to improve equality, access and affordability for underrepresented individuals and communities, this $5,000 scholarship is available for international students and US citizens going abroad. The scholarship will be awared to students with academic pursuits in related disciplines of social justice, global health and global citizenship.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia
The Freeman-ASIA award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc.

Fulbright Commission Summer Institute United Kingdom
Full scholarship (tuition, housing, meals, airfare) for Freshmen and Sophomores to spend the summer studying at a UK university while exploring that country’s rich cultural heritage. Preference is given to students who have never been to the UK and have had minimal experiences traveling abroad. Minimum GPA to apply is 3.7. Deadline to apply is usually early-February, but check thewebsitefor more details.

Fund for Education Abroad
Scholarships of $5,000 per semester or $10,000 for the year are available to students studying abroad. There is no limit to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study. Priority is given to underrepresented students – including but not limited to minorities and to students going to non-traditional destinations. Please note that students must apply one year in advance of the semester or year in which they plan to study abroad.

Gilman-Global Wales AwardThis scholarship opportunity supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means for short-term, credit-bearing study at a Welsh university. The award allows students to strengthen their skills and expand their educational experiences while living and learning in Wales. Successful applicants will receive a study grant of up to $5,000, to be used toward tuition, housing, travel, and related costs for up to one academic year at any of the Welsh Universities.

Gilman-McCain ScholarshipThe U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. TheGilman-McCain Scholarship is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receiveany typeof Title IV federal financial aid.

Inclusive Ireland Scholarship Programme
Education in Ireland and Diversity Abroad have partnered together for the creation of the Inclusive Ireland Scholarship Programme. The Republic of Ireland is committed to providing academically rigorous and culturally immersive study abroad experiences for students from all backgrounds and identities. We believe that diversity among our visiting students only serves to enrich our society and our campuses. Three awards will be awarded in the amount of €3000 each.

Think Swiss Research Scholarship
ThinkSwiss is a scholarship program managed by the Office of Science, Technology, and Higher Education at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. The program is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Ottawa, Canada.
